This can have a profound impact on a child’s education, socialization and emotional wellbeing. Being a young carer impacts the ability to learn, concentrate, complete high-quality homework, being punctual or attend school at all. It can also make it more challenging to make friends, take part in activities outside school and limit future educational opportunities when leaving school and transition to adulthood. One way in which schools can effectively support pupils with caring responsibilities is by allowing opportunities for them to meet, interact, offer and receive peer support. This can positively impact a child’s wellbeing as they would feel understood by others experiencing similar situations, learn ways to cope with emotions and widen their network of support. Barnet Young Carers is the local service, commissioned by the Local Authority, to support young carers. It is a team of experienced professionals who work with young carers and their families helping them balance caring with their lives. We support Barnet schools by setting up a young carers’ group and delivering up to four sessions focused on different aspects of young carers’ wellbeing. The school can then continue running this group independently therefore maximising support for those pupils. If your school has already identified young carers, they will enormously benefit from taking part in this.
